Tyne Bridge

Ovingham Toll Bridge

Opened: 1884.
Builder: The Ovingham Bridge Company.
Traffic: Road.

The Ovingham Bridge is made up of eight 60' spans of cast iron with the piers grounded into the rock of the riverbed and was opened in 1884. The Ovingham Bridge Company exacted a toll from everyone using it. In 1944 the bridge was bought by Northumberland County Council and users were then freed from paying tolls. Originally, a very narrow walkway was used by pedestrians alongside the traffic with a passing place at the centre of the bridge. A new footbridge for pedestrians was erected a few yards downstream of the road bridge in 1972.
