St. Andew's Church, Heddon on the Wall is on the site of an ancient hilltop church on pre-conquest foundations circa 680. 'Long-and-short' work outside east gable of the south aisle, choir with pre-conquest doorheads, Norman sanctuary with zig-zag decoration, vaulted ceiling and roundheaded window, nave with matching western way. Ancient Cross, stone coffin lid and churchwardens chest are displayed in the church. Single bell recast in 1704, 'Jesse' east window 1873, all other windows since stained depicting 26 saints and others. The churchyard has headstones from 1700. Registers from 1656 are held at the County Record Office. A quarter mile to the east of the church part of the Roman Wall is visable.
