A view along the avenue of turkey oaks towards the Column of British Liberty. The Statue which stands on a 140ft column was originally adorned with 66 blocks of gold leaf. According to popular local myth, there was a bag of gold coins or a golden apple hidden under Liberty's cap - and in the 19thC a miner fell to his death as he tried to reach the non-existent treasure.
