I'm surprised there isn't a plaque at the base of this tree, at Sycamore Gap on Hadrian's Wall, which should read "Kevin Costner could see Nottingham from here" but only on a very clear day though. This tree features in the early scenes of Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves, in which said Mr Costner plays the English hero. It's only one of many movies which were partially filmed in the North of England. Hulne Priory near Alnwick also featured in the same film. Other movies worth mentioning are Becket and El Cid both had sequences shot on the sands below Bamburgh Castle and Last Action Hero showed the castle being blown up (blink and you'll miss it). Two movies that feature the Newcastle and Gateshead of the 1960's and 70's were Payroll and the cult movie Get Carter with hard man Michael Caine coming back to Newcastle to avenge his brothers death. Sting starred with Tommy Lee Jones and Melanie Griffiths in Stormy Monday, with most of the action taking place around the Quayside area of Newcastle. Most recently Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone was filmed in the area. Approximately 5 miles of Hadrian's Wall from Housesteads Fort to Cawfields Quarry is National Trust property. Housesteads Fort is maintained and managed by English Heritage. Northumberland Tourist Board have an excellent site which is definately worth a look.
