The Medieval gatehouse was once the entrance to the Abbey's precinct for lay workers. When the bridge over the river was built, about 100 years ago, the new road into the village passed through the archway. The large room, with its ancient fireplace, inside the gatehouse was possibly where poor travellers stayed. Giving shelter to such people was a task undertaken by Abbeys and Monasteries in medieval times. The village post office now occupies the gatehouse.

Some of this text was taken from the leaflet 'Look at Blanchland' which is available inside the Abbey.
