St. Michael and All Angels Church, Alwinton was originally a Norman church. Numerous substantial alterations have been effected over the intervening 900 years, the last restoration being made in 1851. A curious feature of the plan of this church is the great height of the chancel floor above the nave due to the steep slope on which the church is built and also because the chancel surmounts a Norman crypt, later used as a burial vault.
