northumbria

Once a kingdom stretching from the Humber to the Forth, Northumbria is now a convenient term for the old counties of Northumberland and Durham. Along with certain areas of Yorkshire like Middlesbrough, Guisborough and Yarm which have been 'annexed' from south of the River Tees. Northumberland and Durham were anciently called Bernicia and stood at the very heart of the old kingdom of Northumbria with its rich Celtic-Christian and Saxon traditions. This area is one of outstanding beauty from the distant past through its industrial heritage to the present day.
